The
Licensing Process
Obtaining a driver
license in California involves several steps. There are different sets of rules
for minors and adults. For rules pertaining to adults please consult the California
Driver Handbook or www.dmv.ca.gov.
Provisional Permit
- be at least 15 and a half but less than 18 years of age
- submit an application with parent signatures
- pay $24 to the DMV
- complete 25 hours of classroom driver education (we
provide DMV form OL 237)
- enroll in behind-the-wheel driver training (we provide
DMV form OL 239)
- pass a vision exam at the DMV
- pass a written exam on the laws and rules of the
road (California Driver Handbook)
- give a thumb print
- have a picture taken
- permit will be issued once the above steps are
completed but will not become valid until minor spends a minimum of one hour
with a licensed driver training instructor
Provisional License
- be at least 16 years old
- have provisional permit for at least six
months
- complete a minimum of six hours of driver
training with a licensed instructor (we provide DMV form OL 238)
- complete a minimum of 50 hours of driving
with parents with at least 10 hours at night (parent signature required on
provisional permit)
- have proof of registration and insurance for
vehicle used during the driving examination
- pass behind-the-wheel examination
- once licensed may not drive with any passengers under
20 or between the hours of eleven pm and five am
during the first year
